We needed a break on our trip and what better way is there to stretch the legs than walking from the car to a counter stool for grub. This diner is the happening spot in a mixed area of higher end homes near the ski resorts and neighborhoods that harken a picture of Appalachia in one's mind. The diner itself is a very hipster redo of an old school diner that includes a full bar which, I thought, was a fun twist on the already varied menu. The food was good but a bit salty. The staff was awesome and quick to seat us. Our waitress was attentive and the manager was busy making sure all was running smoothly and customers were happy. He did take a minute to talk with us and was a very friendly guy with excitement and a little apprehension about moving away from the Jersey shore to begin this new adventure in the mountains of New York. I was happy to have checked the place out but would only recommend it if you are in that neck of the woods already, maybe at one of the ski resorts or tubing down the Esopus! Not worth a long drive to just the restaurant.
If you are thinking of staying in the area I would suggest checking out the Phoenicia Lodge or Black Bear Campground, where the prices are lower and simple comforts abound. There is also the very trendy and bohemian Graham and Company with Tivoli radios in every room, free bikes to use and well appointed rooms. And try the pancakes at Sweet Sues!!
We hit the neighboring, and more famous, town of Woodstock the day before. Woodstock has many more shops and restaurants to choose from but it also has to be shared with many more tourists. The prices are steep in this area for a Western New Yorker and we only traversed through a couple shops filled with tie dye shirts, incense and knitted hats. I wanted to try the popular deli in town but there was no indoor seating so we stopped at Oriole 9 instead. The entrance way to the restaurant has a chalkboard with unfinished statements beckoning you to fill them in. The atmosphere was bright and casual and the falafel wrap was good after a bit of a wait. Let's say 3.5 stars out of 5!
Next time I am anywhere in the area I plan to get my hike on and head up Overlook Mt. The view is said to be spectacular and there is an old abandoned hotel at the top, as well as a fire tower and Buddhist Temple that can be toured.
There is so much to see and do in a stunning part of New York State that in someways is like a hidden gem. If you are looking for a new place to explore that isn't far from home, let us know at Stowaway and we can help you plan a getaway that suits your style!!
