In honor of my seafaring friends that have booked a spectacular August 2020 cruise, I will be blogging each port they will encounter. Copenhagen is where this great cruise begins and this city has so much to share, from old world charm to modern Michelin star restaurants and all the good stuff in-between. This city is sure to leave you with a feeling of Danish happiness, AKA hygge.

The cruise leaves port on a Sunday so why not fly in early on Saturday for a day and half of exploration and adventure. Norwegian Cruise Lines will put you up at the Scandic Copenhagen, which is in a site-seeing centric location. Don't be shy of trying one of the very hip hostels in Copenhagen, for a less expensive, fun time in the city center. Check out, checking into Generator Hostel, Urban House or Copenhagen Downtown Hostel.

After you have landed and transported your bags to the place of your staying, this is my suggested path to Danish enlightenment:
1. First things first. When in ...Copenhagen, you should probably join the masses and pedal your way around. You can set up the app for Bycyklen from the states, pick up a bike by the hotel/hostel and ride it to Copenhagen main library where you drop off the bike and saddle up your walking shoes for a 3 hour tour WithLocals. This tour will give you all the details of Copenhagen's most famous King, Christian IV, as you pass through his palace and architectural marvels built at his commision. You will hear stories of the Jewish community from WWII and try a delicious Danish pastry and, if your timing is right, catch the changing of the guard. If 3 hours seems like too much, you can check out one of their other 4 offerings online. The tours, guided by this group, get rave reviews and give you personal, insightful sight seeing. The guides share hidden gems and stories that help you dive right into the culture and history of this awesome city. You can even personalize the tour, if you know of something you just can't miss!

2. The tour ends at Nyhavn waterfront. The perfect spot to grab last minute selfies with the scenery and sit for a spell. This is a great opportunity to sample some Danish brews, which you can purchase from a sidewalk kiosk, and grab a smorrebrod (open-faced sandwich) or, a local fave, herring! Be sure to ask your guide for their favorite local spot. Grab a pic with the Little Mermaid statue, after you enjoy your Danish delights.
3. Now that you have refueled, you can rest your bones further on a boat tour and learn more about landmarks, along the Copenhagen canals. Hey Captain boat tours offers a perfect 1 hour ride taking you through the sights and history of the inner harbor.

Alternatively, if your feet are up for further exploration, it is time to shop for souvenirs and just gaze at the local fare. For shopping, Stroget is the most famous street in Copenhagen and one of the longest shopping streets in Europe. Be sure to wander down the side streets, off Stroget to find quirky boutiques and smaller, more interesting local shops.
4. Regroup in your room with a nap or shower or, best yet, both. Then end the day at the old world amusement park- Tivoli Gardens. The amusement park opened its gates in 1843 and, in summer, keeps things going until midnight. If you are OK with heights, you should most certainly view the city from the Star Flyer- one of the world's tallest carousels. There are thrill rides, pantomime shows, lasers by the lake, and beautiful landscaping to take in.

5. get some sleep, there is still time for more tomorrow :)
To be continued...
